Abstract
Three findings from field and laboratory work at the C.R.S. suggest the importance of an examination of the possible use of chemical sprays to control weeds in coffee. These are, firstly, the persistent and substantial reduction in crop yield,in wet as well as in dry years, caused by weed competition;secondly, the serious decline in surface soil structure caused by four years of clean weeding by tillage implements;thirdly, the benefits of mulching both on crop yield, rainfall penetration, and soil structure, all of which would be attained far more easily if weeds could be killed without disturbance of the mulch.
