Abstract
In those parts of the tropics characterized by alternating wet and dry seasons (hereafter termed 'wet and dry tropics'), periodic lack of moisture is one of the most critical obstacles to increased crop production by rain fed farming systems. In these areas it is of vital importance to have a correct perception of seasonal moisture availability and its variation, otherwise the quality of agricultural planning decisions may be affected to the point of putting a brake on economic development.
