Abstract
The breeding behaviour of Glossina tachinoides Westw over most of northern Nigeria is well known and has been reviewed by Nash (1948) and Glover (1961). On the other hand, Jordan (1961) drew attention to the lack of available data on the ecology of G. tachinoides in southern Nigeria. In 1962 and 1963 the author studied the ecology of this species in the vicinity of Nsukka, in the East Central State of Nigeria, where it has been seriously incriminated in the transmission of animal trypanosomiasis, but was unable to locate its breeding sites (Baldry, 1964). However, at that time females of G. tachinoides in the Nsukka area were believed to be larvipositing probably in atypical breeding sites. Intensive studies during 1964 and 1965 on the ecology of G. tachinoides near Nsukka revealed its many varied and unusual hreeding sites; these are reported here.
