Abstract
Kenya has a land area of 582,646 km2 out of which only 116,529 km2 (20%) receives medium to high rainfall. It relies on agriculture as the mainstay for its economy and about 80% of the total population is employed in this sector. The export of agricultural products, notably livestock products and cash crops provides some 75% of the total export of goods and services. Rain-fed subsistence and commercial agriculture is practiced in this medium to high rainfall areas. These areas have been heavily inhabited leading to reduction in available land for crop production.
