Abstract
At this time so much attention is being focused on the problems of the Kenya Coffee industry that there is danger of overlooking the very vigorous efforts being made to solve them.In the past, as now, the well-being of the coffee industry has depended upon research. One has only to reflect on the imminence of catastrophe in the 1930's when mealy bug nearly wiped out the best coffee growing areas or, somewhat later, when attacks of coffee thrips became so devastating, to make this point in its most drastic form. However, research has not only been at hand in times of acute stress but it has helped, in no uncertain way, to sweeten the good years! Yield levels have risen by nearly double over the last two decades largely because of the better methods of husbandry, fertilization and pest control resulting from sound research.
