Abstract
In the Rift area rainfall was slightly above average from June to October, but the other months were rather dry and the total for the year was some 7 per cent below average. In the West Rift area, January to March and November and December were dry; only June and October were wetter than usual and the annual total was 10 per cent below average. In the East Rift area, July and October were the only months with rain much in excess of average, but the annual total was only 3 per cent below average. In the Trans Nzoia, the rains from June to October were above average, October being particularly wet, but shortfalls in other months resulted in an annual total just below average. In Nyanza, except for September, totals were above average from June to October, but rains were rather poor in the remaining months and the total for the year was 11 per cent below average. In the main coffee areas, rains up to September were very poor, but good "short rains" lasting until the end of December reduced the deficit for the year to 9 per cent. At the coast, the total rainfall for the year was almost average, months of slight excesses alternating with wetter months throughout the year.
