Abstract
The importance of cassava as a food and industrial crop is real as countries all over the world show their acceptance through the enormous support in the research and development arena. In Africa and Kenya in particular, cassava is a major source of energy and a promising industrial crop that is likely to improve farm productivity and household welfare. Most striking however, are the major challenges that its (cassava) production are faced with in form of pests, diseases and drought which have profound effect on per unit area production/yields. The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute recognized the role cassava plays in bridging the food gap as well as its potential for industrial use and made efforts to develop superior varieties that address the mentioned challenges without sacrificing the consumer attributes .
