Abstract
Body weights and growth rates of 69 Red Maasai sheep lambs from birth to 10 months of age were analysed. The birth weights were similar at 3.08 ± 0.44 and 3.04 ± 0.33 kg for males and females, respectively. The males were heavier than females at 4,5,6,8-10 months of age. At 7 months, females slightly outweighed males by 2% (P > 0.05). Average growth rates for males were higher between 3-4 and 4-5 months by 31.55 and 11.70 g/day, respectively. Females grew faster between 5th-6th months by 36.6 g/day. Growth rates were similar for both sexes at 6-7 months (by 59.85 ± 27.11 and 59.43 ± 20.04 g/day) for males and females, respectively. Thereafter, males growth rate exceeded females.
