Abstract
The National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) Muguga succeeded the former East African Agriculture and Forestry Research Organization (EAAFRO) which was established in 1947. It is the largest of all research centres under the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute. The centre is situated in Kiambu District in Central Province. It is located about 27 Km West of Nairobi and approximately 5 Km off the Nairobi/Naivasha road. The centre elevation is approximately 2096 metres above the mean sea level. The centre experiences a bimodal rainfall of about 995 mm per year. The long rains occur during the month of March through May while the short rains starts in October and end in December. The mean annual maximum and minimum temperatures experienced by the centre are 20.90C and 10.8°C respectively. The centre, therefore falls under agroc1imatic zone III.
