Abstract
The following extracts are from an article written in 1935 by Sir John Russell, Director of the Rothamsted Experimental Station. * The purpose of the annual publication of the Royal Agricultural Society of England in which the article appeared is "to spread the lessons of research among those to whom they are likely to be of the greatest use by giving the farmer information on the results of the year's work of the experimental stations in a summarized and simple form." The audience Sir John Russell was addressing was thus primarily the farmers of the British Isles. In the next number of this Journal the same subjects will be discussed by the Amani Soil Chemist in an attempt to relate the conclusions to conditions as found in some East African soils.
