Abstract
An evaluation exercise on 20 National and Regional KARl Centres was carried out over a two and a half month period from 2.6.98 to 13.8.98. This exercise was commissioned by the I Director KARl and the Organizing Committee of the Sixth KARl Scientific Conference. The short terIl?- objective of the Mission was to determine the three leading Centres eligible for awards during the coming November 9-13,1998 KARl Conference. The long term, and perhaps' the most important objective was to appraise the performance of the Centres in relation to matters partaining to ~state managemcnt, administration, training, financial management, Supplies and procurement, crop, livestock and Centre mandates. This information, it was hoped, would be useful as a future planning tool for the individual Centres and ultimately for KARl as an Institute. All eight members of the Evaluation Team were each appointed on the basis of their specialized knowledge im one or the other of the aforementioned evaluation categories.
