Abstract
In a Pasture Plant Introduction programme involving perennial species, the researcher is first of all confronted with the problem of evaluating the agronomic qualities of species. The first Of a series of observational trials for this purpose with grass / legume mixtures under grazing at the National Agricultural Research Station, Kitale, Kenya, was reported earlier (Strange, 1960). Since then more grass and legume varieties have been introduced and developed at Kita1e for low and medium altitude arable areas of Kenya (Bogdan, 1965). In the present paper a report of a trial with seven grass and four legume varieties established in 1964 and evaluated under grazing for four years is presented. Some data on dry matter production in the third and fourth years were given in previous reports (Mwakha, 1967 and 1968) but no notes on visual observations before and after grazing were included. These, together with the summary of the previous reports, are given in the present paper.
