Abstract
Cabbage: A total of 12 cabbage varieties were evaluated at Njabini and 10 of these were evaluated at NHRC, Thika. Transplanting at Thika was done in April and at Njabini in May. Establishment was better at Njabini due to heavy rains. Also aphids and cutworms were severe at Thika. The cabbages were at head formation stage in both sites by mid-June. Snap beans: Harvesting of the eight varieties being evaluated at NHRC-Thika commenced in May and continued upto the end of June. A severe outbreak of systates weevil affected the crop although 112 showed some recovery later in the season. Runner beans: Three varieties, White Amalgo, White Emergo and Moncayo are being evaluated in the screenhouse at NHRC, Thika. Seeding was done in June but for White Amalgo replanting was done on 1st July due to poor germination. Carrots: Four carrot varieties are being evaluated at Njabini sub-centre. Seeding was done in May and thinning in June.
