Abstract
The sites selection and soils sampling were done in February, 2002. The request to offer professional assistance in the sites selection was made by Dr. Beatrice Anyango from the Department of Botany, University of Nairobi who is carrying out research work with Dr. Osir from IClPE, Nairobi. The sites were selected on different soil types with different physical and chemical characteristics and known history on land use and management. The criteria used to determine the best places for the sites selection was the nearness and accessibility to Nairobi, and a land use consisting of maize growing. Therefore, guided by these factors, sites were selected and sampled in Mwea (Kirinyaga District), Katumani area (Machakos), National Agricultural Research Laboratories (Kabete, Nairobi) and Karura (Kiambu District). The report gives the descriptions of location and communication, climate, geology, land use, physiography and soils of all the selected sites
