Abstract
In Nigeria, dairying is still in its infancy. Individual livestock. farmers are reluctant to go into commercial dairy production probably because of its high capital outlay md slow rate of returns. Prominent among the factors of production are longevity or the average length of the productive life and milk yield of the indigenous cattle breeds. These factors deserve much attention if dairy production is to be taken up on a comercial scale. Longevity of cows in a particular herd determines to a large extent the viability of that herd for dairy purposes. It his been reported (Asker t al .• 1969) that a long productive life has the overall effect of reducing the number and cost of herd replacements, and increasing the proportion of high-yielding mature animals in the herd.
