Abstract
Results of on-farm studies by Itabari et al. (2003) indicate that the yield of green gram can be increased significantly by runoff harvesting using a catchment to cultivated area (C: CA) ratio of 1 :2. Following these studies, it was decided to promote adoption of this technique alongside tied ridging and zai pitting techniques, which have also been shown to increase crop yields (M 'Arimi, 1978; Njihia, 1979; Liniger, 1988; Gibberd, 1993, Kiome and Stocking, 1995; Itabari et al., 1998; Gichangi et al., 2003), for the production of green grams in the semi-arid areas of Kenya. Demonstration plots were then established at several sites in the semi-arid districts of Eastern Province of Kenya.
