Abstract
On branches of Arabica coffee a series normally of 3-5 buds can be found in the axil of each leaf. They are formed while the subtending leaf is still only a few millimetres long (Fig. I). Initially, these buds are very small and can be seen only under the microscope after the removal of the small, triangular scales (stipules) which cover them. As the buds grow at least a few of them become visible above the stipules.
