Abstract
With the general use in East Africa of dips based on arsenic and toxaphene, these two toxic agents are the most frequent causes of poisoning in livestock. Arsenic, in particular, is so highly toxic that ·even with normal precautions in dipping an occasional fatality is liable to occur. Of 91 cases of suspected poisoning investigated in this laboratory in a year, in 33 of which toxic agents were identified. 26 were poisoning by arsenic, four were toxaphene poisoning and only three involved other known poisons. It is therefore of advantage, in veterinary toxico!ogical analysis, to be able both to identify arsenic and toxaphene readily and to be able to determine, with a minimum waste of time, whether they are present in lethal quantity.
