Abstract
Apart from some traditional surface irrigation on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, along the shores of Lake Victoria, in the Kerio Valley and in the Baringo area - not counting the rather caution flood-recession cropping along the rivers with a pronounced flood-regime - Kenya has no irrigation tradition of any significance. Of a total irrigated area of about 26,000 ha, most is in the private commercial sector; 8,500 ha are in the public sector as part of national settlement schemes under management of the National Irrigation Board, while about I ,500 ha are devoted to smallholder schemes developed by various programs of the Ministry of Agriculture and, to a lesser extent, by non-governmental organizations.
