Abstract
The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute's (KARl) Research Centre, Embu has a long history dating back to the 1950s when it was first established as a General Investigation Centre. The Centre covers 8 administrative districts around Mt Kenya with a diversity of agro-climatic conditions; the districts are Embu, Mbeere, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Meru North, Meru Central, Meru South and Tharaka with a total land area of 18000 km2 a population of over 3.6 million people and approximately 730,000 households.
