Abstract
Kenya's agriculture directly contributes 26% of GDP and indirectly a further 27% of GDP through linkages with manufacturing, distribution, and other service-related sectors. The sector produces the bulk of the country's food requirements in years of favourable weather. The agricultural sector accounts for 80% of rural employment with women providing 75% of the labour force. Agriculture contributes 60% of export earnings, 45% of annual Government revenue and produces almost all the raw materials for agro-industries. With this important contribution of agriculture, development of the sector will have the greatest impact on the livelihood of the people. Kenya is however largely arid and semi-arid (83%) with only 17% considered as medium and high potential. Thus this limits the production potential and often leads to chronic deficits in maize, wheat, rice, sugar and edible oils.
