Abstract
Motion for debate at the forthcoming Coffee Conference refers to the alleged slow rate of expansion of coffee growing in certain African areas and the matter was discussed at several meetings of African planters attended recently by the Chairman and the Executive Officer of the Coffee Board. There is, of course, no legislation impeding the rapid expansion of coffee planting in any suitable-repeat suitable-area of Kenya but there are several factors affecting this progress, over which neither government nor the Coffee Board have any direct control. Firstly, there is a definite, if temporary, shortage of suitable seedlings and those who have recently planted an acre or two, only to find the seedlings ripped out during the night, may be excused for their belief that expansion in the neighbouring reserves is, in fact, fairly rapid.
