Abstract
Two new scale insects have attained pest status on coffee. They are referred to as Fried egg and cottony scales by Kenyan coffee growers.Technically they belong to different genera,Aspidiotus consisting transparent scales and Icerya of cottony scales without any cushions.The fried egg scale occurred mildly initially,1977 at high altitude areas (Yara estate,while Icerya got established from 1980 starting with the coffee estates that border Karura forest on the outskirts of Nairobi city.
