Abstract
One of the main constraints to wheat production in the Mbeya region of Tanzania is believed to be low availability of copper in the soils (Nilsson, 1974). Following Nilsson's report (1974), some research work on copper was initiated at the Uyole Agricultural Centre, Mbeya, mqstly on the evaluation of copper sources and methods of its application with respeot to wheat production. No attempt has been made in Tanzania to evaluate soil test methods suitable for estimation of available copper in the soils of Mbeya region. Similarly, no critical levels have been established for this eLement in the soils below which wheat would likely respond to copper fertilization. Tn view of these considerations, this project was undertaken with the following major obj'ectives-
