Abstract
In East Africa, as in most other parts of the tropics, the economic structure is characterized by a strong predominance of the agricultural sector. It employs around 90 percent of the total labour force in each of .the three countries that constitutes East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda). Exports from these countries consist mainly of agricultural products such as coffee, cotton, tea, sisal, pyrethrum, meat and maize, and a large part of their industrial development is based on these raw materials. Apart from the commercial sector, subsistence farming is important as it produces most of the food for the about 41 million <inhabitants of the region (Morgan, 1973).
