Abstract
A survey of the present distribution of the population with regard to factors of the physical environment and land resources leads to the conclusion that about one half of the world's people are concentrated o~ a mere 5 per cent of favorable earth surface; whereas 57 per cent of unfavorable land supports only 5 per cent of the people. In some extent the reason is to be seen from the map of FIFIELD and PEARCY (1966) of areas hospitable and hostile to man's occupancy (fig. 1). This map represents in a certain sense a first approximation of land evaluation at world scale with following legend
