Abstract
In the year 2004 research centred mainly on evaluating vaccines against rinderpest and contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP). These evaluations were continued from the previous year (2003). The rinderpest recombinant vaccines are intended for use in the eradication of the disease in the remaining pockets within the hom of Africa. The vaccines are thermostable and have in-built markers to allow the identification of antibodies against them. Transmission studies of rinderpest between wildlife (warthogs) and cattle were also undertaken in an effort to understand why the disease has remained in the Somali ecosystem. Samples were tested for rinderpest and PPR. These samples (7788 in number) mainly came from the DVS (PACE-Kenya), PACE-Somalia and Terra Nuova.
