Abstract
The Lome III N.I.P. for Kenya places priority emphasis on food self-reliance and food security . Agriculture is the cornerstone of the economy: it produces nearly all the country's food requirements, employs about 70% of the labour force, provides 35% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 60% of export earnings. Along with agricultural extension, improved agricultural research is considered by the government to be the highest priority in the sector. But agricultural research in Kenya has suffered serious problems over the last two decades due to a lack of comprehensive management system and a lack of coordinated setting for research objectives and priorities.
