Abstract
Pigeonpea (Cqjanus cqjan (L.) Millsp.) improvement by breeding has been limited to the testing of existing varieties and practising selection from available landraces. If a major breakthrough in yield is to be achieved, the future improvement in pigeonpea must be based on planned hybridization to identify parental combinations likely to produce superior segregates or to obtain Fls with high heterosis.
