Abstract
Genetic variation is a pre-requisite for improvement in cropbreeding programmes. CIAT has for many years made available such variation in various types of nurseries ranging from replicated yield trials of elite breeding lines through screening nurseries of advanced breeding lines and disease and insect resistant nurseries to segregating populations for different agro ecological zones and specifically requested germplasm accessions. In Latin America use of these nurseries by National Programmes has led to the release of a considerable number of cultivars.
