Abstract
Mr. H. F. Bargman said that the present situation of East African coffee growers was the result of two wars. The first war gave them a very hard knock;almost all went into the forces, and when they returned their plantations were in poor condition. When they had got things back to normal they were hit by the slump qf 1929 and 1930,and they had only Just recovered from that when the second world war broke out.The men again went to the front.while the women remained behind to do a magnificent job, very often running two or three estates single-handed.Moreover,they had had four years of indifferent rain, and so far this year in Kenya only 10 inches in the main coffee areas.
