Abstract
The Livestock Production Efficiency Calculator (LPEC) was used to estimate the value and volume of meat and milk production from the Kenyan rangelands. Production parameters used in the model are derived from secondary sources. Outputs from cattle, sheep and goats were estimated at Ksh. 2.948. Ksh. 273 and Ksh. 311 per animal per year (July 1996 prices), respectively. Total milk and meat production from the rangelands was estimated at Ksh. 12.7 billion per year. Eighty two percent of the total production came from cattle. 8.2% from sheep and 10.1 % from goats. The advantages of a modeling approach to estimate livestock production are discussed.
