Abstract
The cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) often referred to, as Irish potato is an important food and cash crop. Worldwide, the potato is grown in more than 70% of all countries, in more countries than any other food crop except maize. The total area cropped under potatoes is estimated at 18 million hectares per annum globally (F .A.O.1990). During the last decade, world potato production has been gradually shifting from industrialized to developing countries and from temperate to tropical countries (F.A.O. 1990, Horton and Anderson, 1993).
