Abstract
Agriculture is a form of intervention by man in the balance of vegetation. Man removes some plants from an area and replaces them with others of his own choosing. His success in this endeavour depends on the degree to which he understands three things: energy, water, and nutrients. These three aspects are the concern respectively of agro-climatology for the first two items and soil science for the third. This report attempts i to increase our understanding of the energy aspect (potential photosynthesis) as it relates to agriculture in Tanzania. The study reaches the following conclusions: The highland-lowland differences in potential photosynthesis give a 2 to 1, possibly even greater, advantage to the highland areas with respect to grain yields.
