Abstract
Arid lands comprise in the vicinity of to percent of the earth's land area, and a majority of the human population lives in regions where rainfall is insufficient for crop· production. The practice of irrigation, using mined, impounded, or imported water, is a necessity in many of the water-scarce areas. However, in many situations, irrigation can do more harm than good over the long term if proper care in water and soil management is not exercised.
