Abstract
The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute is a Government Corporation charged with the responsibility of carrying out research in order to develop appropriate technologies for the increased productivity of all agricultural and livestock enterprises in the country. Only Coffee and Tea crops are outside the mandate of KARl, but KARl is expected to develop technologies for soil and water conservation applicable to areas of production of these crops. Agriculture and Livestock production is carried out in a wide variety of ecosystems covering five major Agro-ecological zones. A major challenge for the nineties and beyond is to develop appropriate technologies for increasing agricultural and livestock production in the semi-arid and arid areas ( Ecozones IV and V) which cover over sixty percent of Kenya's land area, as well as economic and sustainable methods for intensive farming of the high potential areas.
