Abstract
The district covers some 14,178km2 (GoK ,1995) with about 896,000 hectares lying within the high to medium potential areas and about 454,00 ha in the low potential category. It has a population of 916,716 people and a density of between 50-100 persons per Km2 • This has risen from .half aa million in the mid sixties to about 1.2 million in the mid eighties. Increases have been high 1965 but declined thereafter due to replacement of traditional food crops like sorghum and millets.
