Abstract
Coffee processing machinery manufactured by Pinhalense S.A-Ma'quinas Agricolas (Brasil) were tested during six picking seasons starting from the late crop of 1988 to the early crop of 1991.The machinery included a mechanical coffee washer with a vibrating conveyor, main drum coffee pulper with a green berry separator and a repasser drum pulper. The tests were aimed at establishing their technical performance in the Kenyan situation. Results of the tests on sorting, grading and pulping systems showed that, with some minor modifications, these equipment can be adopted for use in the existing Kenyan coffee factories either separately or as a whole package. The major problem affecting the equipment was corrosion of some important components hence necessitating frequent painting.Quality results indicated that use of these processing machines had no adverse effect on coffee cup quality.
