Abstract
Reports from the Ministry of Planning and National Development demonstrate that poverty affects nearly 47 percent of Kenya population, and that the situation is grave among rural communities. These rural communities need to form linkages with the private sector and the government to take charge of natural resources that are available or could be developed using emerging technologies to improve their lot. For many years now, Kenya Agricultural Research institute (KARl) in collaboration with United States Agency for International Development (USAID), have implemented programs that have culminated in the development of improved crop production technologies for the rural poor. These technologies have so far served farmers well. There is, however, a felt need to go a step further and build onto these production technologies to ensure that the farmer reaps all the benefits associated with the improved technologies.
