Abstract
In Kenya, Tanzania and Eastern Uganda, perennial streams originate in the high-rainfall, mountainous areas. The indigenous forests clothing these mountains play an important role in maintaining dry season flow by stabilizing the soils, maintaining high infiltration rates and reducing surface runoff in the wet seasons. The timber yield of these indigenous forests is low, however, and economic pressures demand that these areas of high potential be more efficiently utilized.
