Abstract
The Mitunguu Irrigation Scheme located in South Imenti Division of Meru District 220 kms 'from Nairobi displays the following characteristics: - upgrade and extend the existing surface irrigation system to provide irrigation water for up to 400-450 farmers (each with a one hectare irrigated plot) within the existing pattern of landownership provide an effective management to co-ordinate and improve cropping patterns and methods as well as promoting increased water efficiencies - increase the agricultural productivity of the area, and in particular, promote cotton and tobacco (major import-saving crops) as the main cash crops in the scheme
