Abstract
Fusarium wilt (Panama disease), caused by F. oxysporum forma specialis cubense, and Sigatoka leaf spots, caused by Mycosphaerel/a fijiensis and Mycosphaerel/a musico/a, are the most economically important diseases of banana and plantain, and cause major economic losses in many areas of the world, including East Africa. However, the development of effective strategies for managing these diseases has been severely constrained by our inability to accurately diagnose and identify forms of the pathogens responsible for disease outbreaks.
