Abstract
A number of different chromosome numbers has been reported in the genus Hibiscus. Davie (1934) reported haploid numbers of 40, 48 and 7'2 and Diploid numbers from 37 to 50 and 56 and stated that the genus showed a polyploid series with very large numbers. In later studies larger haploid numbers and a range of basic numbers varying from x = 7 to x = 39 were found (Darlington & Wylie, 1956). An additional basic number of x = 18 Was reported by Menzel & Wilson (196 I, I 963a) following their studies on the section Furcaria.
