Abstract
Pinus radiata D. Don is one of the major species in the Kenya afforestation programme and plantings to the end of 1961 total some43, 000 acres in a softwood acreage of 152,000acres. The bulk of the plantings date from1947 onwards, but small areas exist, scattered throughout the Highlands, from earlier experimental plantings (1929-33 and 1940-43). Until Comparatively recently the main effort of the silviculturaI research programme has been devoted to the silviculture of 'the older established plantations of ell presslis spp. Little systematic work has been attempted on the silviculture of P. radiata.
