Abstract
Embu District shows the typical agro-eco10gica1 profile of the windward side of Mt. Kenya, from the cold, wet upper zones to the hot, dry lower zones in the Tana River Basin, as shown on Map 24.0.3. The average annual rainfall reflects this contrast: more than 2200 mm at 2500 m to less than 650 mm near the Tana River at 700 m. The variation is mainly due to the topography but also to the "water recycling" effect of the forests and the specific mountain circulation. Above 2500 m rainfall decreases due to the lower moisture content of the colder air and the stronger influence of the trade wind system, but nevertheless the area is still very wet.
