Nitrogen Level and Cultivar Effects On Nodulation, Dinitrogen Fixation And Yield of Grain Legumes

Abstract
The effects of a low (20 kg N I ha) and a high (100 kg N I ha) dose of N fertilizer on nodulation, growth and nitrogen fixation of three common 'bean (Phaseolus Valguris L.) cultivars as measured by the 15N technique were investigated in a field study, A low dose of N fertilizer did not significantly affect nodulation, dry matter and seed yield of the three cultivars while a high dose significantly reduced nodulation and had no significant effect on dry matter and seed yield of the three bean cultivars. At a low dose of N, beans fixed between 27.7 and 35.2 kg N/ha but fixation was reduced by between 15 and 47 percent at the higher dose of N, At both N levels, the bulk of bean plant tissue N was derived from non-fertilizer soil N. There were no significant interactions between bean cultivars and N level for all parameters.
