Abstract
This paper begins with a discussion of the methodology for ecological monitoring which has been worked out by ecologists on the staff of the International Livestock Centre for Africa. The main indicators of primary productivity used are plant cover and species composition. These are measured at each monitoring site along fixed transects and then estimated at a cluster of secondary points. The principal advantage of this approach is that, once the main transect has been sited and baseline data collected, regular (annual) readings can be carried out in a short time by persons with a minimum of training.
