Abstract
This report gives the results of trials conducted at Ho1a Irrigation Research Station during the long rains 1986. Some of the trials were conducted in the Tana Irrigation Scheme with whom the station is associated. Generally the scheme had problems in the following areas: i) Planting in the scheme extended from late January to the end of May due to shortage of machinery and implements as well as late planting of the short rains 1985 maize crop in the scheme. ii)There was an early outbreak of pests - principally the cotton stainer in the scheme. The crop establishment was further worsened by heavy rains experienced in April and May. iii) An acute shortage of irrigation water was experienced in June and July because of the canals which were clogged with weeds and could not allow the water to flow freely
